"OurHomeHere" Phase 1 on "Things with a future tense"
To start thinking about “Things with a future tense”, I was focus on “time” that included “Past, Present and Future”. I was thinking about “future” is a subject that should be over the “past” and “present”. That is all we know about “history”. To observe objects or things with a future tense, I started off thinking things should be contain “past” so that we can foresee the “future” of it ,but also to initiate further readings on cultural and social phenomenon . Therefore, I have come up with domestic garbage in my living estate, which are used objects and human action related.
The initial frame of this project is to observe the reason of the objects which being deposited. The garbage station is located at the shot-cut walking path from the residential area to the MTR station. Therefore, I walked pass the garbage station when I was going out by MTR and coming back home twice a day. I took photos of the garbage according to some criteria that I set for different purpose. Those are the process of re-framing and reinforce the existing frames to a new field of readings on the deposited objects.
In the first step of this project, I planed to shoot the objects, which are broken and/or including some dirt on them. I thought that they are the main reason of an object being deposited. I trend to use tight shot and close up to let the audience look into the fact and details of it. Most of the items we can see which is broken by human usage of it. For example, the sitting area of chair is sink cause by the frequent use and the weight of the owner. Besides, some dirt is located on the chairs , beds and sofa. They are all made by the owner while they were in use. However, some of the broken objects is made by the cleaning worker who want to facilitate the transportation of the garbage. Mostly they are the big furniture like drawers and beds which made by wood.
On the other hand, I took photos in wide shoot and medium shot too. These two visual grammar can provide the information for audience to know about the quantity and the scale of the garbage .Moreover, the wide shot of the garbage station also reveal the order of things which can give the sense to know how people destroy and deposit the objects.
After the photo shooting of the objects I have done some tagging for each photos.Base on the tagging, I categorize the photos by different kind of items. Moreover, I was adding some additional information about the items and visual gramma that I use for audience to know more about the garbage in my point of view.
Due to the above process that I made, my initial idea of this project which alter me to develop and reinforce the existing frames to a new readings. I found that most of the garbage were made in wood and tailor-made. This finding push me to research more on the usage of tailor-made furniture . The reason of the deposited objects are still important for the coming research, but it would be further develop and extend to another field which focus on changing of the use-value of an object.
